Updated September 18, 2026 · 14 min read
Educational content, based on public industry sources. Salary figures are rough estimates: they vary by country, experience, employer and year. Always verify with official sources and real job postings.

A perfusionist earns clearly above most entry-level clinical roles, because it is a highly specialized job with very few professionals. Rough 2026 figures: in the USA, roughly US$95,000–150,000 a year; in the UK, about £35,000–60,000; in Spain, around €24,000–45,000 gross; in Germany, €45,000–70,000. These are guide ranges: real pay depends on the country, experience, type of hospital, on-call work and whether it is the public or private sector.

Quick table: perfusionist salary by country (2026)

Perfusionist salary in the United States

The USA is, together with Australia, one of the best-paying countries for perfusion. The usual range is US$95,000 to 150,000 gross per year, with experienced perfusionists and chiefs above that. Why: high specialization, direct responsibility for the patient on bypass, and demand that outstrips the supply of certified professionals.

An important cultural difference: in the USA perfusion is its own profession with a dedicated master's degree and certification (CCP), not a nursing specialty.

Perfusionist salary in the UK and Europe

In the UK, NHS perfusionists sit within the Agenda for Change bands, typically £35,000–60,000 depending on band and seniority, with extra in the private sector. In Germany, the Kardiotechniker usually earns €45,000–70,000, varying by region and agreement. Across Western Europe, perfusion is a well-paid, stable profession with sustained demand driven by an ageing population and more cardiac surgery.

Salary in Spain and Latin America

In Spain, pay depends mostly on public vs private sector and years of experience, ranging roughly €24,000–45,000 gross. In Latin America the public/private gap is even wider: in Mexico a perfusionist can go from about MXN 240,000 in entry public posts to over MXN 600,000 in top private hospitals, while in Chile and Colombia experience and city drive the number. Argentina, with high inflation, is best compared in US-dollar equivalent and hospital by hospital.

What pushes a perfusionist's salary up

Beyond the country, there are levers you can move across a career:

Is it a good salary compared with other clinical roles?

Yes, for a structural reason: there are very few perfusionists. It is a niche profession with long, specific training and enormous responsibility — during cardiopulmonary bypass the perfusionist literally sustains the patient's life. Scarcity, specialization and responsibility together push pay above most entry-level clinical categories.
